Mineral department intensifies crackdown on illegal sand mining in Chhattisgarh

A joint team of the Central Mineral Flying Squad and the district-level Mineral Department seizes Chain-Mount machines, Hyvas and tractors for illegal transportation of sand

Raipur,Acting firmly against illegal sand mining and transportation, the Mineral Resources Department of the state government has continued its intensified enforcement drive across Chhattisgarh.

As part of this ongoing action, a joint team of the Central Mineral Flying Squad and the district-level Mineral Department conducted a surprise inspection in Mahasamund district on the morning of May 22, 2026, under the instructions of the Secretary and Director of the department.

During the inspection at the Jonk River near village Baldidih in Pithora tehsil of Mahasamund district, the authorities seized two chain-mounted machines, three Hyvas and four tractors engaged sand excavation and transportation illegally.

During the investigation, the concerned parties failed to produce any valid permission, official order, transit pass, or other mandatory documents related to mining outside the approved sand quarry area, excavation through chain-mounted machines, or transportation through Hyvas and tractors.

Hence, the illegal sand mining activity was stopped immediately at the site. Action was taken under Section 21 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, and both chain-mounted machines were seized and sealed. Until further orders, the machines have been handed over to the mine supervisor. A notice was also issued and served to the concerned quarry operator.

Additionally, the seized Hyvas and tractors are placed under the custody of Sankra Police Station, where they have been stationed within the police premises.
