Transport Ministry introduces GPS Toll Collection System free travel upto 20km know details

If you also consider the hassle of toll as a problem, then now there is news of relief. The government has changed the transport rules. Now toll will be deducted through GPS. The Ministry of Road and Transport has approved the satellite based toll collection system. So will Fastag not be used now? What use will the already existing Fastag be of? We are going to give you answers to all these questions here.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Has issued a new notification. According to which, toll collection in India is now done through satellite based technology i.e. GPS (via) will be. For this, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and On Board Units (OBU) will be used which will already be present in the vehicles.

What will happen to Fastag?
The use of Fastag will continue for now. At present, toll will also be deducted through Fastag and Automatic Number Recognition Technology (ANPR).

Free travel up to 20 kilometers
According to the new rules, there will be no toll for traveling up to 20 kilometers. Separate lanes will be made for GNNS and OBU vehicles. This means that now you will not have to spend extra time on toll. Vehicles equipped with GNNS, OBU devices will have to pay only the amount of distance covered on the road. Toll will be collected from vehicles which are not registered in India and which are not fitted with GNSS devices, through the old toll collection system only.

How will the automatic toll be deducted?
Satellite technology is going to play an important role in toll collection through the new system. Global Positioning System (GPS), and On Board Units (OBU) will be installed in the vehicles which will track the vehicle. They will share this information through satellite. That means the satellite would be measuring the distance traveled by the vehicle at that time. GPS and GNNS devices will help in this work. Besides, the cameras installed on the highway will also confirm the location of the vehicle. This will enable double verification of how much distance the vehicle has covered. Charges will be collected for this distance.

Actually, the new system has been implemented to ease the traffic on the highway. At present, drivers have to wait for several minutes at the toll plaza to pay. This also creates jam at toll plazas and drivers’ time is wasted. Now with the advent of GPS system, toll will be deducted only by measuring the distance covered by the vehicle. This new system will initially be implemented on some major highways and expressways.
