Noida woman loses rs 27 lakh in e sim card fraud know how to protect yourself

A 44-year-old woman from Noida lost Rs 27 lakh in online e-SIM activation. The woman lives in Sector 82 of Noida and lodged a complaint with the police regarding theft of Rs 27 lakh from her bank account. According to the complaint lodged at the Cyber Crime Police Station of Noida Sector 36 (viaA case has been registered under section 318 (4), 319 (2) of the IT Act.
According to the woman’s statement, she lodged a complaint on August 31, 2024 that she received a call on WhatsApp in which the person calling himself a customer care representative of a telecom company. The man started telling the woman the benefits of getting the eSIM activated. The woman fell into his trap and started following all the steps.
The woman shared a verification code she received over the phone. After this the woman’s phone number was deactivated. The next day the woman did not receive any eSIM. He then called the customer service department of the telecom company. The woman was advised to visit the nearest store. From there the woman was given a new SIM card. As soon as she activated it, the woman received many messages regarding withdrawal of Rs 27 lakh from her account.

You should also be cautious about this type of fraud. This type of fraud is called SIM Swap Fraud. Cyber thugs can steal your bank account and personal information by getting a duplicate SIM of your mobile number.
- If you get any suspicious message like any eSIM, then ignore it immediately.
- Never share any OTP or password in such calls or messages.
- By taking the details, cyber thugs deactivate your existing SIM and create a new SIM which they can use themselves.
- You can report such suspicious messages or calls on the government’s Chakshu portal.
